Lyrics: Lorde – Solar Power

“Solar Power” is expected to be the first single from Lorde’s upcoming third studio album. The track features Lorde singing about many tropes of nature and using the outdoors to escape the stresses of everyday life.

The artwork of “Solar Power” was revealed through Lorde’s official website on June 7, 2021, with the following caption: “ARRIVING IN 2021 … PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE,” seemingly poking at how the release details were leaked on Twitter shortly before the announcement.

The single was later released early in part on social media platform TikTok on June 10, 2021 and was subsequently released on all platforms.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as seasonal depression, is a common condition that can lead to people being depressed during particular seasons or times of the year, including winter months. Symptoms include “not wanting to see people” and “feeling low.”

When spring begins, it can lead to sudden happiness as the cold is gone.

The New Zealand singer-songwriter has previously mentioned the seasons affecting her mood on “Writer In the Dark,” a track off of her critically-acclaimed sophomore album Melodrama:

I ride the subway, read the signs
I let the seasons change my mind

Ironically, Lorde visited Antarctica, which is known to be the “coldest place on Earth,” back in February 2019 to learn about the climate crisis. She later described her experience there in an article published by Metro in February 2021:

The sheer effort it takes me to stay alive for five days while the continent does its best to expel me is exhausting.

Lorde in Antarctica.
Back in December 2020, Lorde shared with Newshub that her trip into the wilderness had inspired the title “Solar Power”:

I actually decided on the album name right around that trip. Just coming back from that trip I thought, this is what it is.

This is not the first time Lorde has expressed her dislike for the climate. On 2017’s “Perfect Places,” she sings:

I hate the headlines and the weather

In her upcoming album, also named Solar Power, Lorde celebrates the natural world, attempting to “immortalise the deep, transcendent feelings” she has when outdoors. The references to “green” and “aquamarine” are reminiscent of the natural world and echoes her feelings of looking to the natural world “in times of grief, deep love, or confusion”, as she said in a letter to her fans. She goes on to say “look to the natural calendar for clues”, and as this single was released on the day of a partial solar eclipse perhaps further hinting at her album release date.

Further reference to a connection to nature comes in the line “throw my cellular device in the water”, implying a removal of technology to connect to the environment once more.

Lorde also famously has Synesthesia , and therefore envisions music as colors. The colors “acid green, aquamarine” are the colors of the ocean in summer, and may also be the colors she hears the music being.

In an email announcing her third studio album, she talks about the meaning behind the album:

The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers.

This can explain the transcendent spirit when she discusses solar power— a “new kind of bright”

Solar power’s blissful state of renewal echoes “Liability”,
a track from Lorde’s previous album Melodrama:

They’re gonna watch me disappear into the sun
You’re all gonna watch me disappear into the sun

The outro of Liability indicates Lorde venturing towards a more blissful, carefree future, resulting in the theme of Solar Power— self-love and letting go of one’s past burdens.

[Verse 1]
I hate the winter, can’t stand the cold
I tend to cancel all the plans (So sorry, I can’t make it)
But when the heat comes, something takes a hold
Can I kick it? Yeah, I can

[Pre-Chorus]
My cheeks in high colour, overripe peaches
No shirt, no shoes, only my features
My boy behind me, he’s taking pictures
Lead the boys and girls onto the beaches
Come one, come all, I’ll tell you my secrets
I’m kinda like a prettier Jesus

[Chorus]
Forget all of thе tears that you’ve cried
It’s ovеr (Over, over, over)
It’s a new state of mind
Are you coming, my baby?

[Verse 2]
Acid green, aquamarine
The girls are dancing in the sand
And I throw my cellular device in the water
Can you reach me? No, you can’t (Aha)
[Pre-Chorus]
My cheeks in high colour, overripe peaches
No shirt, no shoes, only my features
My boy behind me, he’s taking pictures (He’s taking pictures)
Lead the boys and girls onto the beaches
Come one, come all, I’ll tell you my secrets
I’m kinda like a prettier Jesus

[Chorus]
Turn it on in a new kind of bright
It’s solar (Solar, solar, solar)
Come on and let the bliss begin
Blink three times when you feel it kicking in

[Outro]
That solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
